Where you'll have signal. Almaty and Astana have fast, modern networks, and Shymkent and Turkistan are solid. The catch is everything between: this is the world's ninth-largest country, and the steppe highways and rail lines spend hours beyond any tower.

How much data you'll need. City stays are normal usage — a mid-size plan. The Almaty mountain day trips (Big Almaty Lake, Shymbulak) keep partial signal, but multi-day steppe or Charyn Canyon trips are download-first territory.

The local catch. The overnight trains. Almaty–Astana is twelve-plus hours and much of it is dark, which no data plan fixes. Load the films, the reading and the offline maps before boarding — the train is the dead zone, not the cities.

When to activate. Install before you fly; it connects at Almaty (ALA) or Astana (NQZ).
