Peru: before you go

Where you'll have signal. Lima, Cusco and Arequipa are strong, with 5G in Lima. The Sacred Valley towns — Pisac, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo — are covered; the Inca Trail is not, and Machu Picchu itself is best treated as offline. Amazon travel beyond Puerto Maldonado or Iquitos means lodge wifi or nothing.

How much data you'll need. A trekking fortnight uses less than you think — the trail days are forced offline. A mid-size plan covers the city ends generously.

The local catch. Altitude logistics happen where signal is thinnest. Colca Canyon and the high passes have long gaps, so carry your bus tickets, hostel addresses and permits offline rather than trusting a last-minute load.
